Best Legal AI Tools in India (2026): Compared by Use Case
Monday is a SARFAESI writ for the Bombay High Court. Tuesday is a handwritten 7/12 extract from Satara that the client needs in English by evening. Wednesday is the counterparty’s NDA, back with the survival clause cut to one year.
That is an ordinary week at an Indian practice, and it is three different use cases. Most lists of the best legal AI tools in India rank products as if there were only one, and never say which task the ranking rests on. Ask them “which is the best legal AI tool?” and you get an answer that is no use to you on Tuesday.
So we asked a narrower question: best for what? We scored ten tools against five weekly tasks, using what each vendor publishes, and picked one for each use case. Below: the picks, one comparison table, the free tools worth knowing, and what we would buy for four kinds of practice.
TL;DR
- For legal research, Jurisphere is our pick: over 200 million documents across nine jurisdictions, including unreported High Court judgments, thirteen tribunals and five regulators, with every citation opening the source at the passage relied on.
- For drafting and redlining inside Word, Jurisphere is our pick: drafts start from the firm’s own precedents, and Review Playbooks apply your starting position, ranked fallbacks and dealbreaker as tracked changes you accept or reject.
- For handwritten Marathi, Hindi or Kannada records into English, Jurisphere is our pick, reading all three in handwriting from scans across 22 Indian languages; for a one-off document, Jurisphere Translate charges by the page.
- Keep Manupatra or SCC Online alongside Jurisphere for the court-recognised copy of a judgment, and add Provakil or SpotDraft if case tracking or a CLM is part of the job.
- For a free check that a case exists, Indian Kanoon is still the first place to look.
- Whatever you buy, open every AI citation and read the paragraph before it goes into a filing; in July 2026 the Supreme Court set aside tribunal orders that rested on cases that did not exist.
Why trust this list
We wrote this list from the work of rolling Jurisphere out to Indian law firms and in-house teams. No tool was tested hands-on for this article; every description, ours included, comes from the vendor’s own published pages, and prices and capabilities were checked from 19 to 22 October 2026.
Jurisphere makes one of the tools on this list, and we have ranked it where we believe it belongs. Where a vendor does not publish something, the card says so, and no vendor paid to appear.
How we chose and assessed these tools
Five tasks, each one a regular on an Indian practice’s desk:
- A handwritten Marathi 7/12 extract, stamped across the middle, into English with the columns intact.
- A Bombay High Court question needing Supreme Court, High Court and tribunal authority in one answer: can a borrower go to the High Court under Article 226 against a SARFAESI measure when the DRT remedy is available?
- An NDA redlined in Word against a playbook with a starting position, a fallback and a dealbreaker on the survival clause.
- A shareholders’ agreement drafted from two of the firm’s own precedents.
- A scanned Hindi FIR into English for a bail application.
We scored each tool on coverage, whether a citation opens its source, how it works with Word, Indian-language support and security certifications, using what its vendor publishes. Practice-management tools (billing, calendars, cause lists) and anything not yet launched were left out.
Why choosing a legal AI tool in India is harder than it looks
Start with the use cases. Research, drafting, contract review, translation and case tracking are five separate pieces of work, and a tool built for one is usually indifferent to the rest. That is how lists end up recommending a research database for a redlining problem. For a primer on each category, read our guide to legal AI tools for Indian lawyers.
Then the material. India has 25 High Courts, and most of what they produce is never reported; the order that decides your limitation point may be a two-page unreported order from last month. Add the tribunals, the regulators whose circulars decide banking and securities disputes, and FIRs, land records and sale deeds in 22 scheduled languages, often handwritten over a printed form. The National Judicial Data Grid showed 5.16 crore cases pending in district and taluka courts in October 2026, and most of their paper is not in English.
Last, who built it. Harvey and Legora bring Indian content through partnerships, Harvey with SCC Online and Legora with Manupatra. That gives them a strong archive. Jurisphere, built in India, puts the Indian layer in the product itself: the regulators indexed as sources in their own right, and Kannada, Marathi and Hindi handwriting read straight from a scan.
What good legal AI looks like in India
Citations first. A good tool shows one after every proposition, and the citation opens the judgment at the paragraph relied on. If clicking does nothing, the tool is asking for trust it has not earned.
The use of fake AI-generated precedents is “invisible, insidious, and catastrophic by the time anyone notices.”
The Supreme Court in Pooja Ramesh Singh v. Jammu and Kashmir Bank, 2026 INSC 668, which also said it is misconduct for an advocate to cite such judgments without verification.
Then measure against the generic baseline, because most lawyers are quietly using ChatGPT or Claude already. Neither has a live Indian corpus, an answer tied to the judgment it rests on, or a way to redline in Word against your playbook, and Stanford’s “Large Legal Fictions” study found general chatbots hallucinating on 58% to 88% of verifiable legal questions. Fine for explaining a concept. Not for a filing.
And the fit: inside Word, where the draft already lives; certifications you can ask for before a client document goes in; the languages your matters arrive in.
The best legal AI tool in India for each use case
Every tool gets the same card: what it is, strengths, keep in mind, best for, pricing. Jurisphere leads the four use cases it is built for, and each section links to the longer comparison.
Legal research
The full comparison, best AI legal research platforms in India, adds Indian Kanoon, jhana, NYAI, NyayAssist and Legitquest.
Jurisphere (our pick)
What it is. An AI legal workspace built in India, researching across over 200 million primary-source documents in nine jurisdictions.
Strengths. The Supreme Court, every High Court including unreported judgments, the district courts of Delhi and Bengaluru, thirteen tribunals and five regulators (RBI, SEBI, CCI, IRDAI and IBBI), updated as they publish. An inline citation on nearly every statement opens the source at the passage relied on, agents for legislation and web search work alongside the corpus, and you can attach the matter’s pleadings and research with them in context.
Keep in mind. District-court coverage is the Delhi District Courts and the Bangalore City Civil Court only, and Jurisphere has not published an independent accuracy study, so test it on your own forum and matters. It does not replace the reporter’s copy that goes in the compilation.
Best for. Litigation and regulatory research where the citation must open the source.
Pricing. Per-seat plans, quoted for your team. Book a 30-minute session.
SCC Online (AI Pro)
What it is. Eastern Book Company’s reporter and database, with AI Pro added in 2026.
Strengths. Answers grounded in the SCC database, overruled cases marked, and the archive most benches recognise.
Keep in mind. No price, trial, coverage breakdown or certification is published.
Best for. Firms already holding an SCC licence.
Pricing. Not published, contact vendor.
Manupatra
What it is. The other incumbent database, now with AI Search and authority checks.
Strengths. A detailed published coverage page (Supreme Court from 1950, every High Court with a start year, about forty tribunals), case-treatment flags and a published rate card.
Keep in mind. How AI Search cites, and what it costs, is not published.
Best for. Archive depth at a published price.
Pricing. Rs 14,250 to Rs 55,460 a year excluding GST, on its subscription page.
CaseMine
What it is. Gauge Data Solutions’ research platform, with the AMICUS assistant and a citator.
Strengths. The Supreme Court, all High Courts and tribunals, citations linked to the source, a citator that shows negative treatment, and ISO 27001.
Keep in mind. Dollar pricing only, and no counts, unreported judgments or district courts in its coverage description.
Best for. Lawyers who want a citator beside AI answers.
Pricing. $499 to $1,499.99 a year, on its pricing page.
Lexlegis.ai
What it is. A Mumbai company with an India-trained legal model, 33 apps and the MIRA agent, across over 14 million curated documents.
Strengths. Every citation traced to the judgment and paragraph, “Truth or Dare” to check the citations in a draft, and published pricing with hosting from India-region cloud to on-premise.
Keep in mind. Coverage is “all major central laws and judgments in India”, with no court-by-court breakdown, and drafting in Indian languages beyond Hindi is on its roadmap.
Best for. Teams that want a published per-user price and on-premise hosting.
Pricing. Rs 9,000 a user a month to Rs 2,88,000 a user a year, on its pricing page.
Drafting
The full comparison, with litigation drafting tools and a worked clause: best legal drafting tools in India.
Jurisphere (our pick)
What it is. Drafting on the web or inside the Word Add-In, from a prompt or from the firm’s own documents.
Strengths. A Drafting Pane with version control and precedent referencing, and four edit types in Word (insertion, deletion, rewrite, replace), each landing as a tracked change only when you accept it. More than 350 workflows drafted by practising lawyers, List of Dates for chronologies from the record, and live sync with Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox so drafts start from the firm’s precedents.
Keep in mind. Knowledge sync, the live link to those folders, is available only to select enterprise clients; on other plans, precedents are uploaded to the File Library by hand. The Word Add-In runs in Word for Microsoft 365 and Word on the web, not on iPad or mobile.
Best for. Litigation and transactional drafts built from your own precedents, in Word.
Pricing. Per-seat plans, quoted for your team. Book a 30-minute session.
Lucio
What it is. A Bengaluru assistant with a Word add-in and a template Vault.
Strengths. Drafts or amends contracts inside Word from the firm’s templates, with attachments from OneDrive, SharePoint and NetDocuments; SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022; used by Trilegal and Bharucha & Partners.
Keep in mind. No Indian litigation templates are described.
Best for. Transactional drafting in Word from firm templates.
Pricing. $149 a user a month on the homepage; the pricing page says “get started to see pricing”.
SpotDraft
What it is. A Bengaluru and New York contract lifecycle platform whose AI drafts and reviews from your templates.
Strengths. Template-driven drafting inside a CLM with approvals, e-signature and a repository; ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type 2.
Keep in mind. Contracts only, with nothing for pleadings or bail applications.
Best for. In-house teams drafting inside a CLM.
Pricing. Not published, contact vendor.
Contract review and redlining
The full comparison, with the playbook table and the Indian-law positions every playbook needs: best AI contract redlining tools in India.
Jurisphere (our pick)
What it is. Review Playbooks, run from the Word Add-In against the draft you are negotiating.
Strengths. Each rule carries a starting position, ranked fallbacks, a dealbreaker and a priority, and resolves to Acceptable, Fallback or Not Acceptable. Generate Edit turns a flag into a tracked change, with or without a comment explaining the position, and playbooks import from the PDF or Word file the firm already has.
Keep in mind. Playbooks are built on the web platform, not inside Word, and the add-in runs in Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac and in Word on the web, not on iPad or mobile, with limited support for Word 2016. Approvals and signatures stay in your CLM or e-sign tool.
Best for. Law firms and in-house teams applying their own playbook inside Word.
Pricing. Per-seat plans, quoted for your team. Book a 30-minute session.
Harvey
What it is. The San Francisco platform, with a Bengaluru office and a Word add-in.
Strengths. Playbooks with a preferred position, acceptable deviations and “strict dealbreakers that override everything else”, edits “reflected as tracked changes” in Harvey for Word, and an optional justification comment on each redline. SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, 27701 and 42001.
Keep in mind. No price is published, and its Indian case law arrives through SCC Online, for firms that hold both.
Best for. Firms already on Harvey globally.
Pricing. Not published, contact vendor.
Lucio and SpotDraft, both covered under drafting, also redline in Word. Lucio applies starting and fallback positions with “risk thresholds” and offers “Apply as tracked change with comment” in its add-in, but names no dealbreaker field. SpotDraft’s VerifAI tests a contract against your playbook in one click and explains each guideline, with a two-week trial, but documents no playbook upload or ranked fallbacks.
Translation
The full comparison, with what each tool reads, language by language, and the court-filing rules: best AI legal translation tools in India.
Jurisphere (our pick)
What it is. Document translation from 22 Indian languages, with headings, paragraphs, indentation, simple tables and pagination carried into the English where the source allows.
Strengths. Handwriting read from scans in Hindi, Marathi, Kannada and English, proprietary OCR on every upload, and the English shown beside the source page, page for page, so certification starts from a review rather than a retyping job.
Keep in mind. Handwriting is read in those four languages only; the other Indian languages are read from typed or printed pages. Translation usage is measured in pages, separately from queries, so check how a bundle is counted. The English still goes to an advocate or court translator for certification before filing.
Best for. Title due diligence and litigation teams with regional-language records at volume.
Pricing. Per-seat plans, quoted for your team, with translation measured in pages. Book a 30-minute session.
Jurisphere Translate
What it is. Jurisphere’s standalone translation product for contracts, judgments and agreements, uploaded as PDF or Word files and returned in any of 21 languages.
Strengths. In its own words it “works on any document, scan, or handwritten page”, keeps clause numbering and formatting intact, and lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2.
Keep in mind. Built for one document at a time; for bundles, with research and review beside the translation, use the Jurisphere workspace above.
Best for. A one-off contract, judgment or agreement that needs translating today, without a seat licence.
Pricing. Page packs: 100 pages for Rs 3,000 (Rs 30 a page) or 500 pages for Rs 12,500 (Rs 25 a page), plus GST.
Anuvad.AI
What it is. A legal translation tool from Vaquill, built by advocates.
Strengths. Eleven to twelve Indian languages, handwritten Devanagari, legacy-font conversion, tables translated cell by cell, a glossary drawn from the Vidhi Shabdavali and an open benchmark with published code.
Keep in mind. The benchmark tests clean digital English-to-Hindi text only, no ISO 27001 or SOC 2 is published, and the vendor itself says courts need certified human translation.
Best for. Per-page translation of Hindi and Marathi documents on a budget.
Pricing. Rs 10 a page falling to Rs 8, with 10 free pages a month, on its homepage.
One name that turns up on other lists does a different job. SUVAS, the Supreme Court’s own engine, translates judgments from English into Indian languages for the registry, with retired judicial officers checking the output. It is not open to practitioners (SCAORA asked for access in March 2025), so it is no help with your filings.
Case tracking and CLM
Case tracking, cause-list alerts and contract lifecycle management are a category of their own, and Jurisphere is built to run alongside them. For CLM, SpotDraft (above) wraps approvals, e-signature and a repository around its AI review. For tracking, the Indian name to know is Provakil, a Pune platform that follows matters across “19K+ forums” for litigation, CLM, IP and compliance, with ISO 27001. It does no AI case-law research, and its price is on request.
Side-by-side comparison of legal AI tools in India
As published by each vendor, checked between 19 and 22 October 2026. Short reasons sit in the cells; longer ones in the notes.

(1) Hindi, Marathi, Kannada and English, read from scans. (2) The database links judgments; how AI Search cites is not published. (3) A Word add-in is listed among its apps; Draft exports to Word with tracked changes preserved. (4) Plans include translated pages; the languages are not named.
To see the redlining column for yourself, redline one of your own contracts against your playbook in a 30-minute session.
Free legal AI tools and pricing in India
Free is fine for some things. Indian Kanoon is free for search and the quickest way to confirm a citation exists and pull a court copy, with a Prism AI tier from Rs 5,000 a year plus GST. Anuvad.AI gives 10 free pages a month, Draft Bot Pro has a free tier for Indian litigation templates, CaseMine gives free accounts to students, judges and prosecutors, and NyayGuru offers 100 free queries a month. Lexlegis.ai and Spellbook run trials, and SpotDraft’s VerifAI gives two weeks.
What free tools cannot do safely is hold a client document. A consumer chatbot has no contract with your firm and no certification you can ask for, and it may train on what you paste. Use free tools for public material and for checking, never for the brief.
Published rupee prices run from Rs 5,000 a year (Indian Kanoon Prism) to Rs 2,88,000 a user a year (Lexlegis.ai); SCC Online, SpotDraft, Harvey, Legora, jhana and Provakil quote on request. Jurisphere quotes per-seat plans with research, review, drafting and translation in the one seat, so the fair comparison is against the three or four subscriptions it replaces. For translation alone, Jurisphere Translate sells pages in packs, at Rs 30 a page for 100 pages or Rs 25 a page for 500, plus GST. Read what legal AI should cost before you compare.
How to choose the right legal AI tool for your practice
Four practices, four shopping lists.
A litigator with two juniors
Research across courts and tribunals, FIRs and land records in Marathi or Kannada, first drafts of applications. Our pick is Jurisphere: one workspace that researches with verifiable citations and reads handwritten records beats three logins. Add Indian Kanoon for free citation checks, and a Manupatra plan if the archive matters to your practice.
A 40-lawyer full-service firm
All five use cases, across practice groups, under one security review. Our pick is Jurisphere for research, review, drafting and translation, one database licence (SCC Online or Manupatra) for the court-recognised copy, and Provakil if the disputes team needs matter tracking. Three vendors is the floor; five is where the IT committee stops reading.
A boutique corporate firm
Redlining against the firm’s positions, drafting from precedents, diligence bundles. Our pick is Jurisphere: Review Playbooks in Word on every incoming draft, Parallel Review across the bundle and drafting from the firm’s own precedents, all in one workspace. Add Harvey only if the firm’s global partners already run on it.
In-house legal at a real-estate developer
Hundreds of old regional-language land records for title diligence, vendor contracts at volume, RERA and consumer matters to track. Our pick is Jurisphere for the translation and the review, with SpotDraft if approvals and e-signature need a CLM and Provakil if the matter list needs tracking. Buy for the bottleneck, not the brochure.
The hidden cost of three subscriptions is not three invoices. It is three security reviews, three processor contracts under the DPDP Act, and three places your documents live.
Data privacy, the DPDP Act and checking AI citations
Ask every vendor four things in writing: which certifications it holds and whether you can see the SOC 2 report; whether your content trains its models; how long a document is held, and where; and how it is deleted. Jurisphere is ISO 27001 certified and SOC 2 Type 2 compliant (security page), and its privacy policy states that customer content is never used to train a model, is held in memory only while a response is generated, and is encrypted in transit and at rest. For the questions clients now put to firms, read what clients are starting to ask about your use of AI.
The deadline is real. Under the DPDP Rules 2025, the Act’s substantive duties apply from 13 May 2027: the firm is the data fiduciary and the vendor its processor, a contract between them is required, breach details go to the Data Protection Board within 72 hours, and penalties run to Rs 250 crore. Sign every vendor contract now as if May 2027 has arrived.
Then the citation check, every time:
- Open the judgment itself.
- Confirm the citation and the bench.
- Read the cited paragraph; the Supreme Court found real cases quoted for paragraphs they did not contain.
- Check the case is still good law (search for later decisions that cite it, or run it through a citator), and that the section survived the move to the BNS, BNSS and BSA on 1 July 2024.
- Record who checked, when, and on which tool.
The Bar Council of India has yet to frame the AI rules the Supreme Court directed, and the Court’s June 2026 draft regulations would require disclosure of AI-assisted material at filing. Until both land, the judgment sets the standard: citing without verification is misconduct.
Where Jurisphere fits
Jurisphere is built for the legal work itself, in one workspace: research with a citation that opens the source, Parallel Review across more than a thousand documents, drafting from your own precedents, playbook redlining in Word, and translation from 22 Indian languages, with handwriting read in Hindi, Marathi and Kannada. More than 350 workflows drafted by practising lawyers and company filings from MCA V3, matched to the CIN, sit in the same place, and Jurisphere Translate handles the one-off document by the page.
It runs next to a reporter subscription, a case-tracking tool and your CLM, and more than 500 legal teams use it, among them CMS IndusLaw, ICICI Bank and Tata Capital; read what they say.
“We are a mid-sized firm and what we intend to do is punch far above our weight. AI is helping us do that.”
Majid Afsar Siddiqi, Co-founder, Lex Consult
Our verdict
For most Indian practices, the best legal AI tool is the one that covers the whole week: research with a citation you can open, drafting and redlining in Word against your own positions, and the handwritten record read into English. That is Jurisphere, which is why it leads four of the five use cases above. Keep Manupatra or SCC Online beside it for the certified copy, and Indian Kanoon for a free check that a case exists.
Look elsewhere only for the use cases Jurisphere is built to sit beside: Provakil for matter tracking, SpotDraft when approvals and e-signature must live in a CLM. Then test the pick the way you would test a new junior: bring the research question you could not get a straight answer to, or the document nobody wants to translate, to a 30-minute session.
FAQ
Which is the best legal AI tool in India?
For most Indian legal work, Jurisphere: it covers research, document review, drafting and redlining in Word, and translation in one workspace built on Indian primary law. Keep Manupatra or SCC Online alongside for the certified copy of a judgment, and add Provakil or SpotDraft if case tracking or CLM is part of the job.
Is there a free legal AI tool for Indian lawyers?
Jurisphere offers a free trial, so you can run research, review, drafting and translation on your own matters before you pay. Beyond that, Indian Kanoon is free for search and the right place to confirm a citation exists. Anuvad.AI, Draft Bot Pro and NyayGuru have free tiers, and CaseMine gives free accounts to students, judges and prosecutors. General chatbots are not legal tools: no Indian corpus, no source links and no contract covering your client’s documents.
How much does legal AI cost in India?
Published prices run from Rs 5,000 a year (Indian Kanoon Prism) to Rs 2,88,000 a user a year (Lexlegis.ai). Jurisphere quotes per-seat plans for your team, with research, review, drafting and translation in one seat, and Jurisphere Translate sells translation by the page, at Rs 25 to Rs 30 plus GST; Anuvad.AI charges Rs 8 to Rs 10 a page.
Can ChatGPT be used for Indian legal work?
For explaining a concept or tidying your own prose, yes. For research, drafting or anything touching a client document, no: it has no live corpus of Indian judgments, does not tie each answer to the judgment it rests on, invents citations, and on a consumer plan may train on what you paste.
Is it safe to upload client documents to legal AI?
Only to a vendor with a contract with your firm, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2, a written statement that your content is not used for training, and clear answers on retention. Under the DPDP Act you remain answerable for what your processor does with personal data. Jurisphere’s certifications are on its security page, and its training and retention terms in its privacy policy.
Can one platform replace several legal subscriptions?
Largely, yes. Jurisphere puts research, review, drafting and translation in one workspace, under one security review and one processor contract. Keep a reporter subscription for the certified copy, and a case-tracking tool or CLM where those are part of the job: six vendors become two or three.
